Luke 12:13-21
Today's gospel is proclaimed by our preacher. Here are some of her notes to accompany her dialogue with our congregation.
``````
I used to hear our text today, “Fool, this very night your life is being demanded of you,” and it took it as a threat. – a moral admonition to get back in line.
But friends, that’s not it.
To know, at every moment, that my life is being demanded of me,
That all can be lost, that nothing is forever,
And that my efforts at security are pointless,
To know all this is actually one of the Gifts of God for the People of God.
God’s gift, Jesus’ message over and over again, is to tell us and teach us
That it’s by our woundedness that we find out holiness.
When I die to my own ego, break apart the structures of my false self,
When I do not cling tightly to my own manufactured sense of security-
Then I am alive and free and happy and safe.
With this in mind, I bring you an image that I stumbled across on Facebook
That has grabbed a hold of my attention for these past weeks
I share it with you and I want to talk about it with you.
A few ideas for going more deeply into Jesus’ paradoxical truth, that it is in our brokenness that we find wholeness:
Read Fr. Richard Rohr’s book “Falling Upward” or subscribe to his daily posts at www.cac.org/category/daily-meditations
Follow Bp. Steven Charleston’s daily messages of healing on Facebook by searching @bishopstevencharleston
Re-read anything by Henri Nouwen, especially his book “Can You Lift The Cup?”
Following Jesus is no easy task, for his peace is wildly different from the world's peace.
| The Rev. Cn. Robert W. (Bob) CornnerFollowing Jesus is no easy task, for his peace is wildly different from the world's peace.
In today's Gospel, how do we make sense of Jesus' reproach of those who wish to follow him? Are any of us ever really ready to follow him, or are we distracted eternally? What do we do, given how distractible we are, when we want to try to follow him?
The Gospel is proclaimed by Ms. Genie Baumann.
What really are our demons?
| The Rev. Greg BrownWhat really are our demons?
Do demons really exist, or are they just a euphemism for mental illness? And how do we make sense of Jesus' healing of demons when terrible things happen in the world?
