The early Christians didn't think of the birth of Jesus as a huge event; they were more focused on when he was coming back. We may not know with precision the time of his return, but we do know when he will be born into this world, and maybe preparing for one can help us prepare for the other.

When a Gentile woman begs Jesus for healing for her daughter, Jesus' initial response is a dismissive one. He responds, in a fully human way, out of the prejudices of his family, religion and culture. But Jesus overcomes what he's been taught. Through Christ we too can overcome our prejudices, and learn to love people who are not like us at all.

In our post-modern, multicultural world how do we, as inclusive, broad-minded episcopalians, reconcile the Gospel message that there is only one Messiah? Do we become like some of those early followers and say, 'no that's too hard', and walk away? And if we walk away, does God ever walk away from us?
